Ramparts Walk
My favorite part of free day was the Ramparts Walk. For a small fee, you can climb a staircase to the top of the Old City walls and walk along them above the city on a stone walkway. Unfortunately much of the route around the city is closed off, but nonetheless, what you do get to see is very cool.
Jewish Quarter
Okay, we attempted to go shopping for souvenirs in the Jewish Quarter. And we did. But the lines between the quarters are not well-defined so I think we may have stumbled into the Christian quarter and/or the Armenian quarter. (You'd think it would be easy to tell by looking at the merchandise being sold, but everyone wants to earn a living off the tourists.) Once again the street vendors kept hoping we'd fall for their "one dolla" items.
Zion Square
Zion Square quickly became our favorite shopping area. In fact we went back on Thursday night too. It actually bears a lot of resemblance to Harvard Square... giving a shopping experience that's much more Americanized than in the Old City. On Wednesday night some Jewish men were performing jubilant dances in the square. On Thursday night, police had to get involved in an incident with young people. Yep, just like home.
