Caesarea
This morning we visited the city of Caesarea. Although the remains of theatres, amphitheaters and palaces can be viewed, the vast majority of the city is still underground. Excavators are working on uncovering it. It was built by Herod the Great when his land fell under Roman rule. To show his allegiance to Rome, he made the city, modeling it after a Roman city. It is, uncharacteristically, not near water or a major crossroad. It has changed hands many times since its initial construction.
